Tapping on Troubling Memories

Painful memories from the past can easily weigh us down and detract from our joy. Tapping provides a wonderful, simple and quick way to diffuse the troubling emotions connected to these memories. Here is a simple script that you can use to clear negative feelings connected to any memory:

Start on the Karate Chop point: “Even though I have this memory and it really upsets me, I deeply love myself anyway. Even though I can’t get this memory out of my mind and it still bothers me, I forgive myself. Even though this memory keeps replaying in my head like a broken record, I love and accept myself no matter what.”

Eyebrow: This memory.
Side of Eye: It’s really upsetting.
Under Eye: It still bothers me.
Under Nose: Even though it was a long time ago.
Under Mouth: This old memory.
Collarbone: I still remember it clearly.
Under Arm: I still feel those old feelings.
Top of Head: It still upsets me.

Eyebrow: This memory won’t leave me alone.
Side of Eye: I’m still feeling it.
Under Eye: It was a long time ago.
Under Nose: But I still feel it.
Under Mouth: The pain and fear.
Collarbone: I still feel it.
Under Arm: It’s still affecting me today.
Top of Head: It still upsets me.

Eyebrow: I want to let it go.
Side of Eye: It no longer serves me.
Under Eye: It’s holding me back.
Under Nose: I want to let it go.
Under Mouth: This upsetting memory.
Collarbone: I’m letting go of the fear and pain.
Under Arm: The worry and doubt.
Top of Head: I am ready to let it go.

Eyebrow: It was a long time ago.
Side of Eye: It’s just a memory.
Under Eye: It can’t hurt me anymore.
Under Nose: I’m leaving it in the past.
Under Mouth: All of the pain from this memory.
Collarbone: I’m letting go of it now.
Under Arm: All of the feelings connected to this memory.
Top of Head: I want to let them go now.

Eyebrow: Letting go of this scary memory.
Side of Eye: This sad memory.
Under Eye: This hurtful memory.
Under Nose: Whatever feelings are connected to it,
Under Mouth: I’m letting them go.
Collarbone: It’s okay to let them go.
Under Arm: I’m clearing them out of my body.
Top of Head: Clearing them out of my mind.

Eyebrow: It’s safe to let go of this memory now.
Side of Eye: It’s something that happened long ago.
Under Eye: Something I heard, something I felt.
Under Nose: Something I saw, something I experienced.
Under Mouth: It doesn’t matter anymore.
Collarbone: I’m leaving it in the past.
Under Arm: This old memory.
Top of Head: It doesn’t have to affect me now.

Eyebrow: It’s safe to let it go.
Side of Eye: I choose to let it go.
Under Eye: Leaving it in the past.
Under Nose: This old memory.
Under Mouth: It’s just a fading memory in my mind.
Collarbone: It can’t affect me now.
Under Arm: It’s fading, fading, fading.
Top of Head: I’m letting it go completely.

Eyebrow: I’m cutting the ties of this memory.
Side of Eye: I’m breaking its hold on me.
Under Eye: It can’t influence me anymore.
Under Nose: I am free from this old memory.
Under Mouth: It’s just something that happened.
Collarbone: I can let it go now.
Under Arm: It’s in the past.
Top of Head: It can stay in the past.

Eyebrow: Clearing the pain associated with this memory.
Side of Eye: Freeing myself from its influence.
Under Eye: It’s just something that happened.
Under Nose: It cannot affect me now.
Under Mouth: Letting it go.
Collarbone: I’m letting it go.
Under Arm: I’m letting it go.
Top of Head: Letting it go completely.

Eyebrow: I’m clearing the beliefs connected to this memory.
Side of Eye: Clearing all of those limiting beliefs.
Under Eye: They can’t control me anymore.
Under Nose: I am making a conscious decision.
Under Mouth: A decision to move forward.
Collarbone: Without the pain and fear of this memory.
Under Arm: I am free and clear.
Top of Head: Free and clear at last!

(Take a deep, slow breath.)

Use this script as often as necessary until you can recall troubling memories from the past without feeling any of the emotional pain that originally accompanied them. You will still have the memories, but those old feelings of sadness, grief, anger, shame, or any other negative emotions will be cleared.
